Wind farm site assessments have traditionally ignored the effect of atmospheric stability on wind power predictions. However, as commercial pressures push developers to consider more difficult sites where atmospheric stability can have a strong influence on the flow, it is becoming increasingly clear that including stability can significantly increase the accuracy of the assessments and estimates of the Return On Investment (ROI).

This webinar will consider:

  • What is atmospheric stability and how does it affect the flow over a wind farm site.
  • How atmospheric stability can be studied using CFD.
  • What data is needed to include stability in a model.
  • What are the benefits from including atmospheric stability.

About the Presenter

Dr Christiane Montavon is an expert in the use of CFD for modelling wind farms. In her PhD thesis she pioneered the use of CFD for wind farms in mountainous areas, accounting for atmospheric stability effects. More recently, she has implemented the models she developed for her thesis into the ANSYS CFD software, creating the WindModeller Application, to make this advanced CFD capability available to non-experts in CFD.
